The Creative Tourism Network was honored to drive a masterclass within the 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism, held in Bahrain (Manama, 18-19 November), under the theme of “Gastronomy Tourism: A Driver of Economic Diversification and Inclusion”. Co-organized by UN Tourism, the Basque Culinary Center, and hosted by the Ministry of Tourism of Bahrain, this high-level event welcomed 500 delegates from 50 countries, along with more than 1,300 virtual participants, showcasing the region’s rich and diverse culinary traditions and the growing global interest in gastronomy tourism as a driver of sustainable development.

In this workshop, the Creative Tourism Network’s director, Caroline Couret, focused on fostering cultural and creative tourism experiences, which align well with the theme of gastronomic tourism. She shared insights on how creative tourism can enhance the gastronomic sector by encouraging travelers to engage deeply with local cultures through immersive, hands-on experiences—such as cooking workshops, food-related cultural exchanges, or learning about the traditions behind culinary practices. She also emphasized the importance of sustainable tourism practices that help to preserve local traditions and cultures while boosting local economies. The masterclass generated rich exchanges among the attendees, experts, and destination delegates worldwide, who shared their experiences and good practices.

The UN Forum on Gastronomy Tourism is the main event for the global gastronomy tourism industry, especially as it focuses on the intersection of food, culture, and tourism. Its impact typically spans several key areas like the promotion of Sustainable Tourism, Cultural Exchange and heritage Preservation, Economic Boost for Local Communities, Global Networking and Knowledge Sharing, and Highlighting Regional Flavors and Diversity, among many others.

Every edition of the forum highlights the uniqueness of different regions’ food cultures. Bahrain showcased its unique culinary heritage and strengthened its position as a gastronomic destination, promoting local chefs, culinary tourism initiatives, and Bahraini food traditions to the global stage.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili underscored gastronomy tourism’s transformative potential in his opening address: “Gastronomy tourism is a powerful tool for economic diversification and community empowerment, especially in regions like the Middle East, where culinary traditions are a unique strength. By advancing policies that promote inclusivity and sustainability, we can unlock its full potential.”
Basque Culinary Center’s Director General, Joxe Mari Aizega, stated: « In this edition of the World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism, held for the first time in the Middle East, we have a unique opportunity to highlight how gastronomy tourism is a bridge that connects cultures and fosters equitable development.”

Her Excellency Ms. Fatima bint Jaffar Al Sairafi, Minister of Tourism of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated: “It is with great pride that we welcome the 9th UN Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism to the Kingdom of Bahrain, a landmark event that underscores our dedication to becoming a leading hub for gastronomy tourism in the Middle East. This forum presents a unique opportunity to engage with international experts and thought leaders, allowing us to share insights and best practices that drive sustainable growth within the gastronomy sector. As we explore innovative approaches to enhance our culinary offerings, we remain committed to fostering economic diversification, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. Together, let us seize this opportunity to innovate, collaborate, and shape the future of gastronomy tourism for the benefit of all.”

The Kingdom of Bahrein also demonstrated its excellence in hosting such prestigious events, perfectly orchestrated by the co-organizers’ teams and brilliantly produced by Richard Attias Associates.

Congratulations to you all for such a very impressive and deserved success!
