Lovers of creative challenges gathered on the first weekend of August for the ninth edition of the Glass Festival in Gabrovo to participate in workshops in stained glass, engraving, and painting on glass.
The encounter occurred at the Museum of Architectural and Historical Reserve “Bozhentsi”.
Denitsa Venkova presented the technique of engraving on glass and assisted those wishing to go through the process phases easily, under the canopy of the Wax purification workshop.
Neda Licheva, who is always experimenting in the spheres of stained glass, ceramics, and art photography, welcomed the fans of reverse painting in the courtyard of the “Baba Rayna” House Museum. The technique is challenging but inspiring, opening up new possibilities for creative expression. Painting an image on the back of a glass surface requires the artist to think in reverse order, starting with the details and ending with the main background.
Teachers and students from the Department of Mural Painting of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Veliko Tarnovo’s \”St. Cyril and Methodius” introduced the festival guests to the possibilities of classical stained glass.
The Glass Festival is a joint project of the Regional Association of Municipalities \”Central Balkan Mountains\” and the Museum of the Architectural and Historical Reserve “Bozhentsi”.
This joint commitment has been growing since 2016, when the teams of both institutions took into account the historical facts of glassmaking in the region, filled them with new content, and drew the attention of the audience with the artistic potential of the art processing of the attractive material.
Engraving finds wide application in the manufacture of decorative glassware (vases, glasses, mirrors, plaques), in architecture – to add an original element to buildings and even in industry, where it is used to mark and label glass products.
Depending on the desired results, different tools and techniques are used for engraving on glass: diamond and carbide tools for hand engraving, electric machines for more precise workmanship, lasers to create subtle and intricate designs in mass production, and customization, high-pressure sand to create a frosted and three-dimensional effect. Hand engraving is a true art form with a long history.
Under Denise’s guidance, the participants tested their creative skills during the first weekend of August.
